Florence Day 2 - The Nightwalkers

I think Florence is the perfect city for an extended weekend stay. Even though you will probably not see everything, as the city is jam-packed with culture und history, but you will find your way around easily and you hardly ever get lost, cause the city isn't that big. Often you don't even need a city map, unless you are looking for something specific. 

I think our preferred time of the day for strolling around are the evenings, because then all the sights are closed and we don't have the pressure of time, we normally have during the day. Often we want to find a good restaurant, but since we are super indecisive, we just keep on walking and then eat some fast food on the go. So our last evening we also spent walking from Piazza della Signoria, the most famous square of the city, along the river, across Ponte Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti and then back. When we were super hungry, almost hangry, we ended up buying some fries and a beer and chilled out at a small piazza near our hotel and enjoyed the mild summer night outside.

Ich denke, Florenz ist die perfekte Stadt für ein verlängertes Wochenende. Zwar schafft man wahrscheinlich nicht alles zu sehen bei dem kulturellen Überfluß, den die Stadt zu bieten hat, aber da die Stadt nicht allzu groß ist, findet man sich direkt zurecht. Man braucht kaum eine Stadtkarte, es sei denn, man sucht etwas Bestimmtes. 

Nicht nur tagsüber erkunden wir die Städte, auch abends sind wir viel unterwegs, da dann die Sehenswürdigkeiten geschlossen sind und wir nicht mehr unter Zeitdruck stehen. Oft sind wir dann auch auf der Suche nach einem netten Restaurant, aber da wir so unentschlossen sind, spazieren wir dann meistens weiter und holen uns dann irgendwo einen Snack, genau wie am letzten Abend. Zuerst sind wir wieder zum bekanntesten Platz der Stadt, der Piazza della Signoria, gegangen. Von dort sind wir entlang des Flusses, über die Ponte Vecchio zum Palazzo Pitti und wieder zurück geschlendert. Am Ende, als wir super hungrig waren, haben wir uns dann einfach eine Pommes und ein Bier geholt und auf einer Piazza in der Nähe unseres Hotels die laue italienische Nacht genossen.

Last Evening in Florence - Outfits

It is always the same, when I just travel with handluggage, I don't have enough clothes. Or at least it seems to me that way. Even though I brought two outfits for one day, I want to wear something different. Like when you're at home and you have nothing to wear, but your wardrobe is jam-packed. Maybe it is colder or warmer at your travel destination or you want to wear something more or less posh. You are never satisfied. Unless you have bought something during your holidays. Then you want to wear these new pieces. 

I think we didn't go shopping in Florence, but previously in Rome, I found that blouse I am wearing in these pics. Thats also why it's a bit creased.:) And the best location for a short outfit shooting is of course the "showcase" square Piazza della Signoria.

Irgendwie ist es doch immer so wenn man nur mit Handgepäck reist, man hat nie genug zum Anziehen. Auch wenn man für jeden Tag fast zwei Outfits dabei hat, es kommt doch so, dass man mit diesen Klamotten dann nicht zufrieden ist, weil es zu kalt oder warm am Reiseort ist, man gerne etwas Schickeres oder Schlichteres anziehen möchte oder sonst ein bizarrer Grund. In Florenz habe ich nicht allzu viel geshoppt, aber zum Glück hatte ich bereits in Rom im Sommersale diese Bluse gekauft, weshalb sie auch ein wenig zerknittert auf den Fotos aussieht. Und als perfekte Location für ein kurzes Outfitshooting war natürlich Florenz' Paradeplatz, die Piazza della Signoria.

Florence Day 2 - Meeting 'David'

What would a city trip to Florence be, without visiting the most famous statue of art history - Michelangelo's 'David'. He can be found at the Galleria dell'Accademia and not as you would expect, at the most popular museum of Florence, the Uffizi. And after we visited the relatively small museum, we felt a bit cheated, because you almost just pay 8 Euros for one (ok, one super amazing and famous) statue and you could easily incorporate the whole collection into another museum, because it's so small. But after I read about the museum ,that they moved the statue already in 1873 to the Galleria from its original place in front of the Palazzo Vecchio for its protection and also with the intention to create a whole Michelangelo museum, it made more sense to me. And why would you change that, if you can make some extra money, because everyone wants to see 'David'. And above all, the museum also has 6 other Michelangelo statues on display, unfortunatelly unfinished, which increases the value of the collection immeasurably.

Was wäre ein Florenzaufenthalt ohne einen Besuch bei der wohl berühmtesten Statue der Kunstgeschichte - Michelangelos 'David'. Diese befindet sich in der Galleria dell'Accademia und nicht wie man annehmen würde, im bekanntesten Museum von Florenz, den Uffizien. Und nachdem man das relativ kleine Museum dann besichtigt hat, fühlt man sich schon ein wenig übers Ohr gehauen, da man immerhin einen Eintrittspreis von 8 Euro zahlt und man die Exponate die sich dort befinden leicht in ein anderes Museum integrieren könnte. Wenn man dann aber nachliest, dass die Statue bereits 1873 von ihrem ursprünglichen Platz vor dem Palazzo della Signoria zu ihrem Schutz und mit der eigentlichen Intention ein komplettes Michelangelo-Museum zu schaffen, dorthin gebracht wurde, macht alles ein wenig mehr Sinn. Vor allem da sich in dem Museum noch 6 weitere unfertige Skulpturen von Michelangelo befinden, steigert dies den Wert der Ausstellung ins Unermessliche.

Florence Day 2 - Museo dell'Opera del Duomo

After our visit of the cathedral and the baptistery, we still wanted to visit something nearby, which was still open. Actually it wasn't planned, but we were pleasently surprised immediatelly. The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo reopened after 3 years of restauration in 2015 and is now super modern and almost double the size it has been before. The many interesting works of art from the cathedral and baptistery from some of the most important artists of their time such as Michelangelo and Donatello, can be seen here. Also to be found here are the gates of paradise, gilded bronze doors from the baptistery,which were moved to the museum after their restauration for conservational reasons. In addition you will learn a lot about the construction of Brunelleschi's dome, which was a technical masterwork in the Renaissance period.

In das Dommuseum sind wir eigentlich nur gegangen, weil es wieder sehr spät war und wir noch in der Nähe etwas besichtigen wollten, aber ich kann sagen, wir waren direkt positiv überrascht. Wer sich vorher den Dom angeguckt hat, der sollte dieses Museum definitiv nicht verpassen, denn es ist nicht nur modern konzipiert, man sieht auch einige der Werke die zum Schutz dorthin gebracht wurden. Und diese Werke sind nicht "irgendwelche" Kirchenartefakte, sondern von den bekanntesten Künstlern der Renaissance wie Michelangelo und Donatello. Ebenfalls dort zu finden ist die originale Paradiespforte des Baptisteriums, welche nach seiner Restaurierung in das Museum verlagert wurde. 

Außerdem erfährt an einiges über den Bau der Brunelleschi-Kuppel des Doms, deren Erbauung zu ihrer Zeit eine Art technische Meisterleistung war.

Fashion Wishlist Spring

As I said in a previous blogpost, I overall loved last years fashion trends, which were extremly feminine with ruffles, off-the-shoulder-tops and sheer, light fabrics with embroidery. Fortunatelly fashion doesn't change over night, so I still love most of this years fashion, even though everything isn't as over the top as it has been and designed in a more simple way. Super on-trend are for example the materials linen and wicker/straw, which remind me of Wild West farmclothes, but in an ugly way. Nevertheless still present are the diverse check prints, polka dots, pastellcolours und broderie anglaise, of which you can find plenty of items in the shops.

Die Mode des letzten Jahres war genau nach meinem Geschmack: extrem feminin mit Volants, Off-the-shoulder und leichten, transparenten Stoffen inklusive Stickereien und Applikationen. Natürlich ändert sich die Mode nicht Schlag auf Schlag und deshalb gefallen mir die meisten Sachen auch dieses Jahr, wobei alles ein wenig schlichter designt ist und nicht mehr so kitschig, wie ich es normalerweise liebe. Wovon ich diese Saison überhaupt kein Fan bin, ist das neue In-Material des Sommers, Leinen, genauso wenig wie von Accessoires aus Bast und Stroh, denn alles erinnert mich ein bißchen zu sehr an Wild-West Farm.  Dennoch ist der allgemeine Style von letztem Jahr noch präsent und Karoprints, Rüschen, Polkadots, Broderie Anglaise und Pastelltöne sind zum Glück immer noch zu finden.

Florence Day 2 - Cathedral & Baptistery

The day before we already tried to visit the cathedral, but my jumpsuit was too short, so we couldn't get in. That day I wore that long dress and fortunatelly had a jacket with me. So if you want to visit, definitely wear modest clothes, which is kind of difficult with the italian temperatures or take a jacket or scarf with you.

As stunning and exceptional the cathedral looks from the outside, as simple it is from the inside. Non the less it is worth a visit to see the famous Brunelleschi dome. But there is also a excavation beneath the cathedral with uncovered roman mosaics and remains of the church called Santa Reparata, which was previously on that exact place.

Also most of the important works of art and statues for example by Michelangelo and Donatello were moved to the nearby museum Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, which my next blogpost will be about. 

In my opinion a must-see is definitely the octagonal baptistery, where the famous poet Dante and some other members of the Medici family were baptized. The dome is covered in magnificent golden mosaics as well is the floor covered with geometric patterns. Renowned are also the artistically important bronze doors. The "Gates of Paradise" you can see after its restoration at the duomo's museum.

Da wir einen Tag zuvor schon probiert hatten die Kathedrale zu besichtigen, ich aber einen zu kurzen Jumpsuit anhatte, versuchten wir an diesem Tag unser Glück. Zum Glück hatte ich eine Jeansjacke dabei, da mein Kleid dieses Mal zwar lang war, aber meine Schultern nicht bedeckt. Also dringend darauf achten eine Jacke, ein Tuch oder sonst etwas dabei zu haben. 

So prächtig und einzigartig der Kirchenkomplex von außen aussieht, so schmucklos ist er von innen, zumindest die Kathedrale. Dennoch ist ein Besuch schon alleine wegen der Kuppel lohnenswert. Die meisten bedeutenden Kunstobjekte und Statuen, z.B. von Michelangelo und Donatello befinden sich aber aus konservatorischen Gründen in dem gegenüberliegenden Museum Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, zu dem wir im nächsten blogpost kommen. 

Unter der Kathedrale befindet sich aber auch ein Ausgrabungsbereich, der sehr interessant ist und sich mit der gesamten Geschichte dieses Ortes, inklusive römischer Mosaiken und den Resten der Kirche, die sich vorher dort befand, beschäftigt.

Spetakulärer finde ich das oktogonale Baptisterium, der Taufkirche des Doms, mit seinen Bronzeportalen. Das prächtige, vergoldete Paradiesportal befindet seit seiner Restaurierung heute im Dommuseum. Die Kuppel ist mit einem prächtigen, goldenen Mosaik ausgekleidet, der Boden besteht aus geomatrischen Mosaikmustern.

Florence Day 2 - Central Market & Outfits

We started our second day in Florence as always late and therefore super hungry, so we first went to the great market hall, which was near our hotel. The market has two areas, the groundfloor with "normal" market stands, which sell everything Italy has to offer, if you want to cook at home or want to buy sweets, snacks or souveniers. The upper floor is a food court with various different food stalls. I was so astonished by the variety and we almost couldn't decide. You can choose between typical italian food such as pizza and pasta, burgers and steaks or fish dishes. And when you have seen the fresh food, which is sold on the first floor, you can imagine that the dishes contain these good ingredients. I expected the prices to be lower, but you have this special, bubbly athmosphere with a wide choice of meals and can also watch the preparation of your food.

Unser zweiter Tag startete wieder sehr sonnig und warm und da wir wieder spät und hungrig das Hotel verließen, machten wir uns erstmal auf den Weg zur Markthalle. Diese besteht aus zwei Etagen. In der ersten befinden sich Marktstände mit allerlei natürlichen Produkten, wie Obst und Gemüse, aber auch Gebäck und Snacks oder Souveniers. Das zweite Geschoss ist eine Art Foodcourt mit vielen unterschiedlichen, internationalen Imbiss und Restaurantständen. Dort gibt es wirklich alles, was das Gourmetherz begehrt, von italienischen Nudelgerichten, über Burger und Steaks bis hin zu Desserts. Die Preise sind auf günstigem bis mittlerem Restaurantniveau und für Self-service ein wenig hoch, aber dafür hat man auch die spezielle quirlige Atmosphäre mit großer Auswahl und kann bei der Zubereitung der Speisen zuschauen.
