Christmas Throwback

Two weeks have passed since Christmas! Wtf?! I can't believe how time flies. To get back into the christmas spirit, here are the pics I shot during the holidays. 
My main-activities: Cooking, eating and unwrapping presents.:) On christmas eve we didn't make cookies, but the the polish filled pasta Piroggi. These always remind us of our late maternal grandmother, who always used to make them during the holidays.
My father made his italian delicacies, like Pittule (small balls of fried dough with varying ingredients)and fish soup, he traditionally prepares every year. The other day we went to one of our favorite restaurants in our neighborhood. It's a chinese one with a big buffet. You can choose from various dishes or use the mongolian barbecue, for which you can select the vegetables and meat or fish by yourself and get your individual meal prepared.

The Italian Holidays - Villa Signorini

Ciao! One thing I also have to mention: The hotel Villa Signorini (or how they call themself: Relais) we stayed at.It's not easy to find and not in the best environment,but it's a hidden gem. When we arrived and we just saw the villa from outside, we didn't expect much, but as soon as we entered, we were impressed. Built in the early 18th century the mansion still maintained it's previous splendor with the beautiful garden, the stucco-ornamented windows and the old wall and ceiling paintings in the halls on the first floor. 
And for me, as an historyfan, the place has noble aura and atmosphere.
One could think, that
Ciao. Erwähnenswert auf unserer Reise ist auf jedenfall auch das Hotel. Versteckt in einer Seitenstrasse und nicht in der tollsten Umgebung, befindet sich das Relais Villa Signorini. Wenn man die in die Jahre gekommene Fassade des Gebäudes sieht (buchstäblich, da es sich ja auch um ein barockes Gebäude handelt), erwartet man nicht die Schönheit, die einen im Inneren erwartet. Durch den Eingang gelangt man in einen Innenhof,von wo aus man abgehend die Rezeption und die Bar, einige Suiten und den Garten erreicht. Im hinteren, rechten Teil des Gartens befindet sich noch ein weiteres eingeschossiges Gebäude, in dem sich weitere Zimmer befinden. Am Anfang waren wir schon alleine durch die Architektur des Hauses, die Stuckverzierungen und den schönen Garten fasziniert, bis wir in den ersten Stock gegangen sind und überrascht wurden, durch die mit noch ursprünlichen Wandmalereien verzierten Sääle.
Auf so einen Historienfan wie mich übt so eine Kulisse natürlich einen faszinierend Reiz aus.

Herkules Farnese / Farnese Hercules

Ciao! So after wandering the streets of Napoli for some hours, we reached our destination, the National Archaeological Museum. There they have most of the artefacts discovered in Herculaneum and Pompeii on display, so it totally completes your visit to these two excavation sites.
//Ciao! Nachdem wir durch die napolitanischen Strassen gewandert sind, hatten wir nach einigem Umherirren unser Ziel, das Archäologische Nationalmuseum (homepage,wikipedia), erreicht. Dort sind auch die meisten Artefakte aus den Ausgrabungsorten Pompeji und Herculaneum ausgestellt, die die Besuche dieser Orte somit komplettieren.

The Italian Holidays - The Streets of Naples

So on day two, our plan was to visit the Museum in Naples, to see all the artefacts, they unearthed in Herkulaneum and Pompeji. And my sister, who went to Naples even weeks before, told me, that Naples is a shoppingparadise. So I was really looking forward to find some good bargains. And this would be my perfect day: sightseeing and shopping, these are the things my heart beats for. (...and of course dogs:).
But first we had to fight our way through the urban jungle of Naples.//An Tag 2 war unser Plan, ins Archäologische Museum in Neapel zu gehen und die Artefakte, die in den Ausgrabungsstätten von Herkulaneum und Pompeji gefunden wurde, zu bestaunen. Ausserdem sollte laut meiner Sis, die Neapel schon einige Wochen zuvor abgecheckt hatte, ein wahres Shoppingparadies sein. Und seit sie mir das erzählt hatte, war ich Feuer und Flamme, auch noch ein paar coole Schnäppchen zu machen. Es wär somit der perfekte Tag für mich: Sightseeing und Shopping, dafür schlägt mein Herz.(ach ja, und Hunde nicht zu vergessen:)
Aber zuerst mussten wir durch den Großstadtdschungel von Neapel, auf der Suche nach dem Museum.:)

Ciao! Ok, today I have to bring the Herculaneum-posts to an end or otherwise it will get too boring. So many times, people, who are not that interessed in the history of the ancient world, told me, that for them, such an excavation site  is just a huge pile of old stones. And I can understand them, because you need a lot of passion for that theme or you will be bored instantly.
//Ciao! Ok, heute muss ich aber mallangsam mit Herculaneum abschliessen, sonst wirds auch ein bißchen langweilig.
Von Leuten, die sich nicht so sehr für die Antike interessieren, habe ich schon oft gehört, dass sie solche Ausgrabungen uninteressant finden, da es für sie ja nur ein Haufen alter Steine ist. Ich denke, man braucht auch eine Menge Fantasie und überhaupt Begeisterung für das Thema, ansonsten hat man dort sonst keinen Spass.:)

Buongiorno! I'm a huge historylover and I always dreamed of being an archeologist.(I still ask myself, why I didn't follow that dream.) So visiting Pompeji and Herculaneum has always been on my bucketlist. For me it is like a timetravel and so interesting to see, how people lived 2000 years ago. And it is sometimes so fascinating and unbelievable, how they created so many awesome things with so little knowledge.
And because of the burial by the pyroclastic flows after the eruption of Vulcanus in 79 AD, the city I extremly well-preserved.
//Buongiorno! Ich bin ja ein großer Geschichtsfan und es war früher sogar mein Traum Archäologin zu werden:). (manchmal frag ich mich, warum ich das nicht gemacht hab). Also war es natürlich auch schon immer ein Wunsch von mir, Pompeji und Herculaneum zu besichtigen, denn ich denke, man findet nirgendwo anders auf der Welt so guterhaltene antike Städte, wie diese. Und man kommt sich echt wie auf einer Zeitreise vor. Herculaneum ist übrigens noch besser erhalten, als Pompeji, da sie "nur" durch pyroklastische Ströme verschüttet wurde.

The Italian Holidays - MAV - Ercolano, Naples

Ciao. So that's the problem, if you take one million pictures like me. It takes you also one million years to edit them. And even though autum has already started some time ago, I am stuck in summer on my blog. So now I really have to hurry, cause who wants to get reminded of the beautiful summerdays, when it's grey and rainy outside.;) So after our beachvacation in Puglia, we drove to Naples, to do some sightseeing. We stayed in a hotel in Ercolano, a suburb of Naples. There you can find the amazing archaelogical site Herculaneum.
It's like a Mini-Pompeji and the first day we planned to go there, but first we went to the Museo Archeologico Virtuale. This entirely virtual museum gives a great insight into the roman life and the appearance of the city prior to the eruption of vulcanus in 79 AD. There are many multimedia installations, which can be used interactivly. With this museum it is easier to visualize, how beautiful the city was, before its distruction,if you then go to the ruins.
Ciao! Also das ist das riesige Problem, wenn man eine Million Fotos schiesst. Man brauch auch eine Million Jahre, um diese alle zu bearbeiten. Also bin ich auf dem Blog immernoch im Sommer hängengeblieben, obwohl, es ja schon lange nicht mehr sommerlich ist. Und wer will schon bitte Sommerfotos sehen und an die schönen Sommertage erinnert werden, wenn es draußen grau und regnerisch ist.;)
Komme ich also mal langsam zum 2. Teil unserer Reise und die führte uns zum sightseeing nach Neapel. Wir hatten ein Hotel in dem Vorort Ercolano gemietet, in dem sich auch die Ausgrabungsstätte Herculaneum befindet, ein Mini-Pompeji sozusagen, was aber meiner Meinung nach sehenswerter ist. Dazu aber ein anderes Mal mehr. Bevor wir also zu den Ausgrabungen gegangen sind, haben wir uns ins Museo Archeologico Virtuale (Virtuelles archeologisches Museum) aufgemacht. Dies ist ein sehr innovatives Museum, welches nur auf multimedialen Installationen und Animationen basiert. Es zeigt einem, wie die Stadt vor der Eruption des Vesuvs um 79 nach Christus aussah und unterstützt die Vorstellungskraft, beim späteren Besuch der Ruinen.
