Antiquarium of Boscoreale

After we visited Villa Oplontis, we took the train to Boscoreale, where you can visit an antiquarium, a small archaeological museum with finds from the surrounding excavations. There the life of the people, who lived in that area before 79 AD, the year of the volcano erruption is explained through artefacts. They cover all the important sections of human life such as agriculture, medicine and cosmetics and the flora and fauna during that period. Most impressive I found the casts of a pork and a dog, where you can even see the collar he was wearing.

Nachdem wir in der Villa Oplontis waren, reichte uns dies natürlich nicht für den Tag und wir fuhren noch eine Station mit der Bahn weiter nach Boscoreale, wo sich eine weitere römische Villa befindet, die aber während der Zeit restauriert wurde, sowie ein Antiquarium, ein kleines archäologisches Museum mit Funden aus den umliegenden Ausgrabungen. Es werden die Bereiche Flora und Fauna, sowie Landwirtschaft, Kosmetik und Medizin behandelt und anhand der Funde erklärt. Am beindruckensten sind wohl die Abgüsse eines Schweins und Hundes, an dem man noch sein Halsband erkennt, die bei dem Vulkanausbruch verschüttet wurden und die ich zuvor noch nirgends in der Art gesehen hatte.

Napoli - Villa Oplontis

Everyone knows Pompeii und some may have also heared of Herkulaneum, when it comes to ancient excavations in the region of Naples. But there are so many more and I want to see them all.:) One, the Villa Oplontis, is probably the largest residential complex, that has been found so far. It is located in Torre Annunziata, a small town just a few train stops from Naples. It is believed, that Neros wife Poppaea was the owner of this villa due to a discovery of a pottery sherd with an inscription. And even compared to other villas it was more luxurious with marble columns und remarkable freschos, a swimming-pool, thermal baths und multiple gardens with fountains. Many of the artefacts are now on display at the Archaeological Museum in Naples. It is so well preserved an restorated, it's just breathtaking. Definitelly a must see!

In der Umgebung von Neapel gibt es neben den bekannten Ausgrabungen wie Pompeii und Herkulaneum natürlich noch einige andere. Von der Villa Oplontis hatte ich schon viel gehört, aber dort hin hatten wir es zuvor noch nicht geschafft. Die Villa ist wahrscheinlich eines der luxuriösesten Anwesen, welches während des Vulkanausbruches verschüttet, konserviert und wieder ausgegraben wurde. Sie befindet sich im heutigen Torre Annunziata, nur wenige Bahnstationen von Neapel entfernt. Auf Grund der Größe, der Qualität der Dekorationen und eines Fundes, wird die Frau des Kaisers Nero, Poppaea, als Besitzerin vermutet. Die Villa verfügte neben Bädern mit Saunabereich über mehrere Gärten mit Springbrunnen und einen riesigen Swimming-Pool. Am beeindruckendsten sind auf jeden Fall die Wandfreskos, die überall im Haus zu finden sind und mit denen der Mysterienvilla in Pompeii konkurrieren können.
