Palermo - Nightlights

Our usual daily routine normally looks like this: visiting a museum or a historical place, then exploring the streets and do some shopping, if there are nice shops around, and when they close, seeing some openair sights, like squares and parks. At least this day it went exactly that way and we were lucky, that the roof of the Palermo Cathedral was open until late at night and from there, we also saw, that there was a city fest nearby, where we of course went afterwards.

Unsere übliche Tagesroutine wenn wir auf Reisen sind, sieht oft so aus: zuerst einmal ein Museum oder eine historische Stätte besichtigen, dann durch die Straßen streifen und shoppen, bis die Geschäfte schliessen und schließlich Openair-Sehenswürdigkeiten, wie Plätze oder Parks abklappern.

An diesem Tag lief es z.B. so ab und am Abend hatten wir Glück, dass die Besichtigung des Daches der Kathedrale von Palermo noch bis spät Abends geöffnet war. Von dort aus haben wir dann auch gesehen, dass in direkter Nähe ein Stadtfest stattfand, was wir uns dann natürlich auch angucken wollten.

Palermo - Regional Archeological Museum

As soon as I discover, that there is an Archeological Museum in a city I visit, it's always on my to do list. This one wasn't on top of it, but because we had to change plans, due to the unexpected early closure of the Palace of the Normans aka Royal Palace, we went there. Since there was some renovation work in progress, one floor was closed, so we just saw two thirds, but also the entrance was free. Since the museum is located in a former cloister complex, it has a wonderful inner cortyard and garden with exotic plants, banana trees and fountains, which create a unique atmosphere, where I wanted to stay for hours and dreamt of having such a garden myself at home. The museum has items on exihibit, related to the sicilian history, with greek, punic and roman pieces, as well as an etruscan collection from Tuscany. So if you are in Palermo and interested in ancient history, I would recommend a visit.

Sobald ich sehe, dass es ein Archäologisches Museum in einer Stadt gibt, muss ich natürlich dorthin. Zwar stand dieses nicht an erster Stelle auf meiner Palermo- Bucketliste, aber da wir unseren Tagesplan wegen der unerwarteten früheren Schliessung des Normannenpalastes kurzfristig ändern mussten, hat es uns dann dahin verschlagen. Wegen Restaurierungsarbeiten waren einige Räume geschlossen (möglicherweise sogar ein ganzes Stockwerk), weshalb wir aber auch keinen Eintritt bezahlen mussten. Da sich das Museum in einem ehemaligen Kloster befindet und über einen wundervollen Innenhof verfügt, ist es schon einen Besuch wert. Mit den exotischen Bäumen, Bananenpalmen und dem Geräusch der Springbrunnen im Hintergrund entsteht so eine einzigartige Atmosphäre, dass ich dort Stunden hätte verbringen können.
