Florence Day 1 - Palazzo Vecchio

I already visited the Palazzo Vecchio some years ago, when I went to Florence for the first time, but I don't remember much. Maybe because my sister and I weren't super enthusiastic about the Renaissance era and more interested in the ancient times and  the Baroque architecture at that time. The baroque style is all about displaying splendour, whereas the Renaissance is a bit more rustic.
The Palazzo Vecchio is definitely one of the main attractions in Florence and because my boyfriend hasn't been there, I couldn't remember anyways, the Palazzo Medici Riccardi was closed that day and I wasn't dressed appropriately to visit the Cathedral, this had to be our destination for our first day.
When the palazzo was built in the late 13th century, it first served as the city parliament's headquaters and later became the Medici's gouvernment palace. Even today it is used as Florence's town hall and on the day of our visit a political meeting took place at the Hall of the Five Hundred, the most impressive hall in Palazzo Vecchio. On the second floor you can visit the magnificent Medici appartments, decorated with fresco paintings. And there is another highlight, which is the tower, where you have the most amazing view over Florence. This was a tip we got and I would totally recommend. We first thought about visiting the Giotto tower, which is also a main attraction and right next to the cathedral. But we were told, that the tower at Palazzo Vecchio is nearly as high as the Giotto tower and even offers longer opening hours.
